Франк Хърбърт е един от най-известните фантасти на миналия век. Той ни остава една от най-великите фантастични творби "ДЮН". Днес тези романи са повече от популярни. Все повече млади читатели откриват фантастичните му светове. Книгите му са преведени на дузина езици в над 20 милиона копия по целият свят.
Франк е роден и израства в щата Вашингтон. Още от малък той има множество странни хобита и се интересува от много неща. Най-вече се е интересувал от литературата. Винаги когато е бил на скаутски лагер той е носел със себе си книги за четене. Още в младите си години той се е вдъхновявал от мнозина писатели на фантастика и приключенски романе. Даже веднъж докато се хранели с неговото семейство той е заявил, "Аз искам да стана писател." Тогава неговият дядо Джон Мак'Карти, му казва, "Страшно е. Не е нормално толкова малко дете да бъде толкова умно." За негово облекчение(и за читателите) Франк не е като една свойте героини в "Дюн" Алиа. Тоест възрастен човек в тяло на дете. В гимназията Хърбърт е бил непоклатим отличник. Когато неговите съученици искали да на научат нещо, като половия живот или как да си изработим ръчен гранатомет, те казвали, "Да попитаме Франк. Той ще знае отговора."
За съжаление никому известнит до тогова Франк се сблъсква с проблеми. Не успява да завърши колеж поради учебната система. Иска да учи това, което на него му е интересно. И за това напуска и не се дипломира. От тогава започва да работи най-различни неща. Работи като луд за да преживява, сменял е постоянно работните си места и се местил от град на град. През цялото това време той пише книгите "Дюн". Трудът му над Дюн трае шест години докато ги завърши. След като я завършва цели 23 издателства отхвърлят книгата му. Най-накрая книгата му намира издател и Франк Хърбърт получава аванс от близо 8,000 долара.
